About Readability Scores

Readability scores help you understand how easy or difficult your text is to read. Different formulas measure different aspects of readability, such as sentence length, word complexity, and syllable count. Use these scores to tailor your writing to your target audience.

Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease

Scores range from 0-100. Higher scores indicate material that is easier to read. Scores around 60-70 are considered acceptable for general audiences, while scores above 80 are very easy to read.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

Indicates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text. For example, a score of 8 means an 8th grader can understand. Aim for 8th grade level for general audiences.

Gunning Fog Index

Estimates the years of formal education needed to understand the text. For most general audiences, aim for a score under 12.

Coleman-Liau Index

Calculates grade level based on characters per word and words per sentence. Unlike other formulas, it doesn't use syllable counting.

Tips for Better Readability

  • Use shorter sentences (aim for 15-20 words on average)
  • Prefer common words over complex ones when possible
  • Break up long paragraphs
  • Use active voice instead of passive
  • Include subheadings to organize content
